Rudolf Steiner’s View of Time

Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s* views on time are best illustrated with a passage from a 1918 lecture titled, “The Dead Are With Us” :

“In the spiritual sense, what is ‘past’ has not really vanished, but is still there. In physical life men have this conception in regard to space only. If you stand in front of a tree, then go away and look back … the tree has not disappeared … In the spiritual world the same is true in regard to time. If you experience something at one moment, it has passed away the next as far as physical consciousness is concerned; spiritually conceived, it has not passed away. You can look back on it just as you can look back on the tree. Richard Wagner showed that he possessed knowledge of this with the remarkable words : ‘Time here has become space.’ ”

These views of Steiner’s have something in common with the idea of “stepped” levels of being. On our level, we have three-dimensional bodies and a fourth dimension is experience as duration, or time. In the level above us, there are four dimensions of space and the fifth is experienced as time. And so on up to dizzying numbers of dimensions.

It can be seen that beings in the level above us would see our time as space, thus they would see our lives as a solid object stretching from our birth to our death. To imagine what this might be like think of standing by a river and watching the flow of a small segment of the whole stream. Next, you are standing on a mountain where you can see the whole river from its “birth” as a spring, to its “death” flowing into the sea. The first is our view, the second is the view from the next level up.

Extended Mind

Extended mind is a phrase used by Rupert Sheldrake, the Oxford biologist, to explain all kinds of paranormal phenomena. He believes that this mind stretches out beyond us and accounts for the way some of us know when another person is looking at us.

Try watching people on the street as they walk past from a high window. The number who suddenly look up directly at you shows that they “know” they are being “pinged” by you. The only way it could happen is if there is a continuity of “mindstuff” between the two people.

Sheldrake conducts many experiments in this field, with remarkable results. His book, The Sense of Being Stared At, is a classic of the genre. As an accredited scientist, his experiments are always well designed and hard to fault.

Deepak Chopra also writes widely about the extended mind, which he calls the “non-local mind”. In his book, SynchroDestiny, he outlines a way of being in contact with this mind, and a series of exercises to improve perception of it.

Unlike the scientific methods of Sheldrake, Chopra uses ancient Indian techniques, often from Vedanta. The two sides of this coin give us an interesting contrast : the extended mind seen from modern science and from ancient spiritual systems.

Chopra’s book is out of print, but can often be found in library stacks. To check on the best price for Rupert Sheldrake’s The Sense of Being Stared At, click here.

Does Magnetite Confer Sixth Sense?

A company is claiming that its new product, a dietary supplement called Magneurol6-S, will help users to develop a sixth sense.

The product contains magnetite, a mineral said to give the brain of animals the sixth sense-like abilities often known as ESP. Magnetite is a valuable iron ore made up of the mineral iron oxide. Permanently magnetized deposits are called lodestone. Pigeons are said to have a lump of this mineral in their brains which accounts for their homing abilities.

The company selling the supplement claims that the amount of magnetite in human tissue determines the degree of paranormal awareness each individual experiences. “Animals have long been known to sense magnetic fields,” said Baard Williams, spokesperson for RemCure Enterprises. “Fin whales mysteriously follow the Earth’s geo-magnetic fields. Canines demonstrate the ability to predict earthquakes and, additionally, in India an entire tribe escaped the recent Tsunami two days before the devastating wave.”

RemCure believes that it can safely increase magnetite levels in humans with its product, Magneurol6-S.

N.B. This is not an endorsement of the product.
