Spooked, The Ghosts of Waverly Hills Sanitorium

Waverly Hills
Waverly Hills Sanitorium, described as “one of the scariest places on Earth,” is the subject of an 83-minute documentary set to premiere on the Sci-Fi Channel on June 7th at 9pm EST. The four-story, 506-room hospital was opened in 1926 during a severe tuberculosis outbreak. Thousands of patients were treated here, many of them carted through the 500+ “death tunnel” when the disease overcame them. This tunnel has become a focal point for filmmakers.

  5. I was born and raised in Louisville, and just got back from visiting my mom who still lives there. Myself and a friend rode over to Waverly Hills and walked as close aas we could geet to it. That has got to be the eeriest spookiest building I have ever seen.

  6. If I ever make it out that way, I’ll have to go visit it. Thanks for stopping by, Rich. :)

  7. I saw the “Ghost Hunters” show. I also watched “The Death Tunnel” on 06/08.
I really enjoy watching and hearing ghost stories. I actually have my own encounters of the supernatural kind. I would love to come visit. I need a job with Ghost Hunters.

  8. The building is gorgeous. Please keep it !!!!!!

  9. I liked that photograh, too. :) It’s very stark and intimidating.

  10. I work at a place called HealthSource Saginaw in Saginaw Michigan. The two buildings are nearly identical. HSS was built as a tuberculosis hospital in 1936. Like Waverly, it is 5 stories tall and 800 feet long. It is also about 40 feet wide. Hss is also haunted with numerous ghosts, many of them children who were there with polio in the fifty’s. One year ago in June 2005 there was a partial collapse of the North wing. The building just fell down. There are still about 250 elderly, mostly dying residents housed there.

  11. I loved the Ghost Hunter show - it had me at the edge of my chair. I would love to see and know more about Waverly. Any ideas where I can get more info and pictures?

  12. Hello: Yes I show the show and i liked it. I would like if you show some more about waverly Hill Sanatorium. if you do i will be watching.

  13. I would like to see the old building be restored to it’s original state. I think the ghost’s would like that too. They would be more comfortable and it would help the area in the tourism industry by offering tours.

  14. Jim: I would imagine that places like Waverly and the hospital you work at would have a sad, oppressive energy about them.

Maria and Clint: I’ll look to see if I can find anything else. Check out the links at the bottom. These sites have some pics as well as the history of some of the patients who lived at Waverly.

Kitty: They do offer tours, although they must not advertise this much.

  15. I thought the show was awesome and I have got my tour set up for August 26, 2006 at 9:30 pm. I so can’t wait! when I do return from it I will get back on to tell you all about it! Talk to you all soon!

  17. I have taken the tour of all 5 floors it is an exteamly creepy place! They show you the shadow people which is extreamly weird. It is an awsome tour on the 3 floor somthing grabbed my left sholder I was in the back of the group by myself and I turned around and no one was there. 19. If you would like to arrange a tour of Waverly Hills you need to call Tina Mattingly she ownes the building her number is (502) 933-2142. Unfortunatly all of the tours of the building are booked all the way up through January of 2007. Tours are given only on tuesday the times are 8:30,9:30 or 10 the tours are normally 2 hours long and cost 20 dollars. They take you on all of the floors the morgue and death tunnel. It is a great place to go and visit and scary at the same time. If you have any more questions please e-mail me.

  20. I love the old build. I been there and it is very scary. I hope they fix it up.

  22. WHS is a very interesting place. I love to have a tour of the place but i don’t think I could have my family get the guts to go there.
But if anyone what to know the website to get to the Ghost Hunters Webpage is On the SciFi. com and the search box in the bottom right hand corner just type in Ghost Hunters and it will take right there.

  23. I love Waverly! I’d love to go, but, I am kinda only 13 BUT, I probably could. I just don’t have the money and people who would come with me, cause I thought I heard you would have to have at least 10 people. Maybe that’s just what I heard. I almost did a report on Waverly last year, but I wasn’t allowed to.
